V.E. Day - War and Peace.
May
8th, 1945, the day World War Two officially ended in Europe. With Hitlers
suicide in his Berlin Bunker on April 30th, the Third Reich fell under the
control of his successor, Karl Doenitz. Under Doenitzs orders, General
Alfred Johl was sent to S.H.A.E.F. (Supreme Headquarters Allied
Expeditionary Forces) to seek terms for an end to the war. After six years
of conflict and the loss of millions of lives, the Nazi menace had been
crushed and the war in Europe was finally over. This insightful program,
made to coincide with the sixtieth anniversary of VE-Day, charts the
events that led to the end of the war, as well as the festivities that
followed, along with exclusive interviews from many different sources and
nations who witnessed it all first-hand.

The Fall of Berlin.
This
compelling documentary tracks the events that lead to the conclusion of
the war in Europe. As the Americans create a bridgehead on the River Elbe,
the Luftwaffe makes a last desperate attempt to counter the fury of the
allies bombing of Berlin. Whilst Hitler visits the Eastern Front, the
Hitler Youth builds barricades around the doomed city. But all is lost, as
far as the Third Reich is concerned. The Russian Army launches a
devastating attack along the Oder River, only forty miles from Berlin. The
German surrender becomes inevitable, and the hapless city is divided up
amongst the victors.

Churchills War
Winston Churchill succeeded to the highest office amidst
turbulent and extraordinary events. In the early 1930s his powerful
warnings about the dangers of Nazi fanatacism had been dismissed as
alarmist, but by the time he became Prime Minister, on the afternoon of
May 10th 1940, his grimmest forebodings had been proven all too
true. Western Europe was a cauldron of war. German divisions
poured effortlessly into Holland and Belgium and had begun turning for the
French frontier. The prospects for Britain and her new leader were
inconceivably black. French intelligence estimated that Britain
could withstand a German onslaught for no more than three weeks.
Hitlers forces had enjoyed unbroken and astonishing success, leading the
highest levels of power in Britain to believe that Hitler could not be
beaten. Churchill alone never faltered, announcing to the
British people that his aim was Victory - victory at all costs, victory in
spite of all terror; victory however long and hard the road may be.
Given the circumstances, it was an astonishing goal to set before the
exhausted nation. What followed is now history, from the defeat of
the mighty Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, the Battle of the Atlantic
against the U-boats to the annihilation of the Wehrmacht on the Eastern
Front. It is easy now to criticise Churchill. Good commanders
like Wavel were treated unfairly by him; the ill-fated convoy PQ17 set
sail to disaster at the Prime Ministers insistence. These decisions
were, at the time, far from simple and whatever Churchills failings they
are far outweighed by the splendour of his achievements. From the
very outset he recognised the Nazi regime for what it was and fought it
unswervingly. His masterful oratory not only inspired a nation but
kept priceless hope alive in the hearts of millions enslaved on the
Continent. In President Kennedys words, Churchill took the English
language to war.

The Holocaust - The Liberation of Auschwitz.
Etched deeply into the pages of history, Auschwitz
conjures up images of death, torture and unimaginable human
suffering. At the time of the release only 18 minutes of the footage
contained within this DVD had been seen in the west; despite it being used
as damning prosecution evidence at the Buremburg Trials. Recorded
from January - February 1945 by a Soviet film crew attached to the 1st
Ukranian Front, the programme tells the story of the liberation of the
Auschwitz camp. Captain Alexander Vorontsov, a member of the camera
crew, describes the emotions that he and his comrades felt as they were
confronted by the appalling scenes at Hitlers infamous death camp.
In the interest of preserving the original character of the material, the
footage has been left unedited, emphasising the truly shocking nature of
the crimes recorded.

The Holocaust - Dachau and Sachsenhausen.
Whilst Hitler sought the answers to his Jewish problem
more and more centres of containment sprung up throughout Nazi occupied
Europe. Two such camps were Dachau and Sachsenhausen, and although
perhaps not such recognisable names as Auschwitz, they were no less
crucial in the persecution and extermination of the European Jews.
Under the watchful eye of Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS and Hitlers
right hand man, a series of containment, transit and death camps were
built within Europe, to systematically cleanse all those people considered
inferior by the Third Reich. With the liberation of these two camps
in April 1945, the true extent of mans cruelty to his fellow man would be
revealed; the untold dead, inhumane treatment and squalid conditions would
be laid bare for the entire world to see.

The Holocaust - Ghetto Theresienstadt.
Between 1941 and 1945 the small fortress town of
Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia became a transit point to the death camps
in the east for thousands of Czech, German, Austrian and Dutch Jews.
All those deported to Theresienstadt were led to believe it was an end
camp from which they would travel no further. They were promised a
comfortable and peaceful life in the Reich home for the aged and were
hoodwinked into signing over to the SS all of their properties and
assets. In reality, many would be sent on to death camps such as
Auschwitz. From 1943, following international concern, the Nazis
developed Theresienstadt into a show camp, a propaganda exercise designed
to conceal from the outside world what was really happening to European
Jews. A large scale beautification programme swung into action,
giving the camp a pleasant and respectable facade, a deception that
succeeded in shielding the terrible truth.

The Holocaust - The Yellow Star.
One hundred dead are a catastrophe; millions of dead are
a statistic. - The horrendous observations of Adolf Eichmann. This
Oscar nominated documentary serves not only as a remembrance but a lesson
and a warning for the future. It follows the plight of European Jews
during the terrifying period from 1933 until the final defeat of the Third
Reich in 1945. Never before had the world seen such contempt for
human life on such a grand scale, the murder of an estimated 6 million
Jews, with countless others persecuted. During the 1930s a wave of
national fervour swept through a tumultuous Germany; people looked for
answers, and the politicians were all too willing to point the finger of
blame towards the Jewish population. Few, if any, could have
foreseen how the views of one man would unfold... that man was Adolf
Hitler.

The Holocaust - Ravensbruck and Buchenwald.
Ravensbruck: Women from more than 20 countries were
incarcerated between 1939 and 1945 in the Ravensbruck concentration camp
in Germany. They were subjected to gross maltreatment, humiliation
and some were tortured to death all in the name of the Third Reich.
The purpose of this documentary is to keep alive the memory of the fate
suffered by these women and the inhumane treatment inflicted by their
captors. Buchenwald: After being established in the German town of
Weimar in the summer of 1937, Buchenwald was to develop into one of the
largest concentration camps in Germany, with approximately 250,000 inmates
from some 35 different countries. More than 50,000 were to die
during the reign of terror, by torture, deliberate starvation and
systematic culling. Buchenwald was eventually to be liberated by US
troops in April 1945.

The Holocaust - Majdanek.
Discovered by Russian troops in July 1944 the Majdanek
Nazi concentration and extermination camp near Lubin was the scene of some
of Hitlers most disturbing handy work. Apart from using carbon
monoxide, Majdanek was one of only two camps to use the deadly Zyklon B to
poison victims in the gas chambers. In the hands of the Nazis, the
efficient use of these chemicals would result in the extermination of a
massive number of inmates. Majdanek was also unique among the death
camps, in that Jewish prisoners did not form the overwhelming majority of
its intake. Of the total inmates only 40% were Jewish, 35% Polish
and the balance predominantly Belarusionas, Ukranians, Austrians, French,
Russian, Italians and Dutch. This rare and stark documentary
graphically portrays the methodical murder, starvation and torture of an
estimated 2 million innocent victims and demonstrates the frightening
efficiency of the German death camps. Also captured here on film are
rare scenes from a Russian post-war tribunal, where survivors are seen
giving evidence against captured SS officers and camp officials, this
evidence was often to result in the conviction and execution of those
standing accused.

Europes Secret Armies - The French Resistance
By the time the feared occupation of France by German
troops had become reality, French resistance had already sprouted its
first tenuous roots. Clandestine groups intent on disrupting and
harrying the occupying force played no small role in bringing the Third
Reich to an end. Sabotage, propaganda and espionage were just a few
of the methods adopted by the brave men and women of the French
Resistance.

Europes Secret Armies - Germany - Resisting from
Within.
Far from being willing participants in the Wehrmachts
march across the world, many Germans openly or covertly opposed the Nazi
regime. Religious leaders, students and even his own generals
conspired against Hitler through anti-Nazi material, sabotage and several
unsuccessful assassination attempts.

Europes Secret Armies - The Polish Resistance
Unlike many of the other European countries that suffered
invasion during World War Two, Poland had the unenviable task of fighting
foes on two fronts; the Germans from the west and the Russians from the
east. As a direct result the Polish resistance fashioned itself into
one of the most professional and successful underground forces in
Europe. From S.O.E. trained Cichociemni to the Jewish population in
Warsaw ghettos, the spirit of the Polish people proved indestructible
beneath the Nazi jackboot.

Europes Secret Armies - The Mountain Men of Crete.
Its geographical importance in both German and Allied
planning for the domination of the Mediterranean and Africa was to prove
Cretes downfall. As the Germans mounted Operation Mercury a ragbag
collection of defenders readied themselves for the onslaught. Nazi
intelligence had assured the attacking force that their presence on the
island would be welcomed by the presumed docile inhabitants. The
local Cretans, along with an eclectic mix of Allied troops, would prove
that intelligence flawed.

Europes Secret Armies - The Secret Armies of the Low
Countries.
Focusing on the plight of the Dutch people, this DVD
examines the resistance which confronted the Germans during their
occupation of Holland. In a regime where distributing anti-Nazi
leaflets carried the same punishment as being found with a gun, the men
and women of Holland showed extraordinary bravery as they sought to regain
their independence. Featuring interviews with surviving resistance
fighters, this programme explores the stories of individuals and a nation
that refused to succumb to fear.

Europes Secret Armies - Norwegian Heroes.
A crucial vantage point for both Allied and German
planning, Norway found itself in a tug-of-war throughout the early years
of the Second World War. During that time the only constant was the
unflappable commitment of the resistance fighters. The disabling of
the heavy water plant in Vermork was just one example of the
professionalism and skills of these people. Working alone or with
the help of the S.O.E., Norwegian men and women refused to roll over and
proved invaluable in bringing an end to Nazi domination across Europe.

D-Day Assault on Fortress Europe

1944 - 2004 The 60th Anniversary
Early in the morning of 6th June 1944, a vast and bizarre
armada ploughed steadily against stiff headwinds through the rough waters of
the English Channel, heading for the Normandy coast. Amongst the 5,000
vessels were many of the best British and American warships of stupendous
collective firepower, as well as ancient battleships and tankers on their last
voyage, destined to be sunk to provide breakwaters. Thousands of the
craft had been built to make one short journey only; to ferry the invading
allied forces, together with their immense diversity of equipment on the last
difficult, dangerous stretch from the transports to the shore of enemy
occupied France. It was D-Day. Four years in the planning, two in
the organising and one day in the execution, the landing in Normandy was
easily the largest and most extraordinary combined military operation ever
attempted. It was also a crucial one, had D-Day failed the Western
Allies would have found it impossible to launch to launch another operation
for at least a year or more and today's map of Europe might have been very
different. One of the millions taking part in the landings, Admiral
Ramsay, was famous for his dislike of the slightest exaggeration. As
Operation Overlord got under way, he told his officers "Gentlemen, I am
sorry about all the superlatives, today they happen to be true". Here is
that story.

Battle of the Bulge, Crusade in Europe
By mid December 1944, the Allies had penetrated the German border, and
were threatening to push the entire battle line into Germany. The Germans
attacked after preparations were completed in the greatest secrecy, on
December 16th. It was a blow of staggering proportions. The Nazis employed
three armies for the assault, totalling some 14 infantry, and 10 panzer
divisions. On the morning of December 17th, it became clear that the
German attack was in great strength. They were employing considerable
armour and were progressing rapidly to the west. Later that morning the
Nazis tore two gaps through the Allied line. When the US 7th Armoured
Division came down from the Northern flank, the situation was still
unclear. Finally, on January 16th, with the meeting of the US 3rd and 1st
Army, the Battle of the Bulge was over.

VJ Day The War in the Pacific
The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on 7 December 1941,
left the United States stunned and outraged. The 3,581 military personnel
killed and wounded that Sunday morning dramatically brought the reality of
war home to every town in America. Even as President Roosevelt talked of
"The day that shall live in infamy" in asking congress for a
declaration of war against Japan, tens of thousands of young men were
lining up at recruiting stations across the United States to enlist in the
Armed Forces.
This video is a definitive look at the historic events from that first
fateful attack to the conclusion of World War II, featuring rare colour
and black and white footage of the historic battles, including Midway,
Guadalcanal, the invasion of the Philippines and the dropping of the Atomic
Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, through to the final surrender agreement
at Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945.

Guns For Malta
During the Second World War, more than 14,000 tons of bombs were
dropped on the tiny island of Malta, damaging or destroying 30,000
buildings. yet the besieged Allied forces operating from Malta were
instrumental in altering the course of the whole war.
Packed with archive action, including AA Gunner Stan Fraser's private
cine film, this documentary shot on location in Malta, vividly portrays
why the island was awarded the George Cross. 'Guns of Malta' is considered
to be the most complete film record of the siege. Her Majesty the Queen is
featured at the dedication service of a memorial bell. The bell was
commissioned by members of the George Cross Island Association to act as a
permanent memorial to the 7,000 men, women and children who gave their
lives during the battle.
British, Canadian, German and Italian pilots discuss the air war. We
accompany Spitfire aces Bob Middlemiss and Laddie Lucas along with
Hurricane pilot Don Stones back to their old mess at Mdina, where they
recall the tactics, the humour and the drama.
Under the sea the greatest submarine battle in history was being
fought. John Wingate, who served in the "Fighting Tenth"
flotilla explains why he believes the tiny u class subs "won the
war". Other veteran submariners recollect the dangers of underwater
operations in the Mediterranean.

Dunkirk - Battle for France
"So long as the English tongue
survives, the word Dunkerque will be spoken with reverence".
The glowing language with which the New York Times greeted the
extraordinary rescue of the beleaguered British Expeditionary Force from
otherwise certain defeat and captivity on the continent, was in many ways
typical of the time. In Britain, despite Churchill's stern reminder
that "wars are not won by evacuations", a tangle of myths
quickly sprung up around Dunkirk, which came to be regarded almost as a
major victory. A major victory it certainly was not. Dunkirk
was a brilliantly executed withdrawal of land forces - minus all their
equipment - across the Channel, following a series of unparalleled
military disasters. Indeed, to the Germans, Dunkirk was virtually a
sideshow. Intent on completing the conquest of France, Dunkirk
became a bitter symbol of British betrayal. Quarrels and
misunderstandings had beset the Alliance, and at one stage the British
were near to systematically deceiving their partner. Yet the
evacuation owed much to the unstinting bravery of the French troops
fighting at the Dunkirk perimeter or beyond, and gratitude was not
wanting. The visions conjured up of a ragged fleet of fishing boats,
yachts and dinghies sailing the channel, their pilots risking life and
limb to save our soldiers from certain defeat and captivity, is vividly
realised using very rare footage only recently obtained and painstakingly
reassembled.

The History of World War Two
- The German Invasion, The Allied Response
Britain's response to Germany's Blitzkrieg invasion of
Poland in 1939, was the British Expeditionary Force, sent to Europe to
prevent the Germans following their successful airborne invasion of the
Low Countries, with an armoured assault against France. The BEF's
enforced, heroic withdrawal at Dunkirk left the RAF, under Sir Hugh
Dowding, to win the Battle of Britain and postpone invasion plans
indefinitely. As World War Two entered its second, decisive, phase,
the British Army showed its teeth at El Alamein where Montgomery's victory
halted Rommel's armoured sweep through North Africa. Further East,
Hitler's attack on the Soviet Union proved suicidal: German surrender at
Stalingrad left Russia poised to punch into the heart of the Reich.
In the Far East, Japan followed the pre-emptive strike at Pearl Harbor
with rapid territorial gains before being pushed back from Midway by
American naval might. In Europe, RAF Bomber Command blitzed German
cities as the D-Day invasion of Normandy was taking shape. By April
1945, American and Russian forces had Berlin surrounded - the liberation
of Europe was complete. These momentous events are portrayed through
front-line film footage and carefully researched contemporary accounts.

Know Your Enemy - Japan

The Second World War brought America and Japan within each
other's line of fire. America deduced that to defeat your enemy, you
must first know your enemy. This official orientation film, produced
by the American War Department, introduced the ordinary American people to
their enemy. Containing authentic newsreel and captured enemy
footage, it would educate the Americans regarding Japanese culture,
traditions and history. Produced at a time when the Americans were
still at war with the Japanese, this was a propaganda film. Despite
this, it is lacking in the hatred and bias that such material normally
contains; instead it attempts to honestly understand and explain the
historic forces that led to the Pacific War.
