Hardback Book

Fall of France - Act with Daring.

On May 10 1940 the Phoney War ended as the German Army unleashed the Panzers on France, Belgium and the Netherlands.  In less than 50 days all three nations were overwhelmed and the British Expeditionary Force driven from continental Europe. The Germans inflicted losses of 350,000 killed and wounded and 2 million missing or taken prisoner at a cost of 155,000 to themselves. That the BEF survived at all was only thanks to the miraculous evacuation of over 300,000 British, French and Belgian troops from the beaches of Dunkirk. The myths surrounding the miracle of Dunkirk have obscured the events both leading up to and after it, the story that is now told here in all it details. For the 60th anniversary of this dramatic campaign Martin Marix Evans has returned to the original source and first hand accounts to dispel the myths and cast new light on the momentous events of the summer of 1940.

Paperback Book

Dunkirk, The British Evacuation 1940 by Robert Jackson.

This is the story of the dark days of 1940, when defeat overtook the British Expeditionary Force in Flanders and the ghost of a great army came home from France.  It is the story of a lost campaign, as untried young men armed with little more than rifles took on the might of Hitlers panzer divisions while the Allied armies crumbled on all sides.  It is the story of French soldiers too, whose heroism and sacrifice made the deliverance of Dunkirk possible.  It was the greatest disaster in British military history: the Second World War was all but lost. Yet from the rout rose that legendary spirit that somehow found triumph in defeat, success in the extraordinary evacuation of so many men from beneath the German guns.  Robert Jacksons closely detailed account of three weeks of battle, and the nine days it took an armada of ships to evacuate 198,000 troops recalls with startling clarity how unprepared were the British for war in 1940.

Hardback Book

The Battle of the Atlantic by Roy Conyers Nesbit.

The Battle of the Atlantic was a seminal campaign of the Second World War, and upon its outcome depended the very survival of Britain.  Winston Churchill claimed that the U-boat threat was the only thing that really frightened him.  This deadly battle involved thousands of men, ircraft, ships and submarines fighting above, across and beneath countless miles of ocean.  The strength of the German U-boat force came close to starving the island nation into submission.  In the end, Britain won - but only just.  When war broke out in 1939, the German navy soon realised that their best chance for success in the Atlantic would be undersea attack.  Admiral Karl Donitz developed a tactic named the wolfpack strategy, in which groups of U-boats would hunt and attack Allied convoys at night.  This approach soon took a heavy toll on Allied shipping and in 1940 alone over one thousand ships were sunk.  As merchant convoys were decimated, it became increasingly difficult to maintain essential supplies and Britains lifeline was almost severed.  By 1943 the tide had turned, and the possibility of a German victory was rapidly diminishing.  Allied intelligence had finally cracked the seemingly impenetrable German Enigma code.  Stronger escort groups were dispatched to accompany convoys, and aircraft were endowed with cutting edge radar equipment to detect and destroy the prowling submarines.  New technology and hard hitting tactics brought unsustainable losses to the U-boats, and the German forces retreated.

Paperback Book

Germanys West Wall - The Siegfried Line by Neil Short.

Germanys West Wall, known to the Allies as the Siegfried Line, played a crucial role in the bitter fighting of 1944 and 1945 in North-West Europe.  Constructed in the period immediately after the remilitarisation of the Rhineland in 1936, the Wall stretched for 300 miles from Cleve in the north to the Swiss border and consisted of some 14,000 pillboxes.  The Siegfried Line initially blunted the US attack, and Hitler used it as a foundation from which to launch the Ardennes Offensive.  This title takes a detailed look at the development and form of this key fortification, examining the principles of its defence in visual depth, whilst also discussing its fate in the wake of the Allied onslaught.

The Maginot Line 1928-45 by William Allcorn.

The Maginot Line, the massive series of fortifications built by France in the 1930s to defend its borders with Germany and Italy, is perhaps the most maligned collection of fortifications ever built.  Despite being a technological marvel, and the most sophisticated and complex set of fortifications built up to that time, it failed to save France from crushing defeat in 1940.  Yet there are those who argue that it accomplished exactly what it was designed to do.  This book provides a concise and informative treatment of the Maginot Line, from North-East France to the Mediterranean.  Packed with plans, contemporary and modern images and digital artwork, it presents a detailed visual exploration of this famous fortification system..

Falaise 1944, Death of an Army by Ken Ford.

The battle around Falaise in Normandy during August 1944 saw the destruction of the German Seventh Army.  This book details the chain of events which led to the German retreat and the ensuing liberation of France.  The British and American breakout battles had released motorized units to wage a more mobile war against the German static defensive tactics, and at Falaise the armoured units of US Third Army encircled the German Seventh Army crushed against the advancing British Second Army.  The results were devastating: those troops able to escape the disaster fled, whilst those who remained were killed or captured and vast quantities of armour and equipment were lost.

Operation Barbarossa 1941 (2) by Robert Kirchubel.

Of the German Army Groups that attacked Soviet Russia, Von Leebs Army Group North, tasked with seizing the Baltic States and Leningrad, was the smallest and weakest.  General Kuznetzovs Northwestern Front, however, was in an even weaker state.  Despite brave counterattacks and defense by the Soviet forces, the germans smashed through the Dvina Line, then the Stalin Line, flooded into Latvia, and pressed on to encircle Leningrad.  This book examines the German offensive, as well as the courageous Soviet attempts to halt the German spearhead, defending every possible line against overwhelming odds.

The Marshall Islands 1944.  Operation Flintlock, the capture of Kwajalein and Eniwetok by Gordon L Rottman.

Following the capture of Tarawa in November 1943, American eyes turned to the Marshall Islands.  These were the next vital stepping stone across the Pacific towards Japan, and would bring the islands of Guam and Saipan within the reach of US forces.  In their first amphibious attack, the new 4th Marine Division landed on Roi and Namur Islands on February 1st 1944, while US 7th Division landed on Kwajalein.  At the time this was the longest shore to shore amphibious assault in history.  The lessons of the bloody fighting on Tarawa had been well learned and the successful attack on the Marshalls set the pattern for future amphibious operations in the Pacific War.

Crete 1941. Germanys lightning airborne assault by Peter D Antill.

Operation Mercury, the German airborne assault on the island of Crete in May 1941, was the first strategic use of airborne forces in history.  The assault began on 20th May, with landings near the islands key airports, and the arrival of reinforcements the next day allowed the German forces to capture one end of the runway at Maleme.  By 24th May the Germans were being reinforced by air on a huge scale and on 1st June Crete surrendered.  This book describes how close the battle had been, and explains how German losses so shocked the Fuhrer that he never again authorized a major airborne operation.

The Waffen-SS (2) 6. to 10. Divisions by Gordon Williamson.

The military branch of the Nazi SS security organisation grew by the end of World War II from a handful of poorly regarded infantry battalions in 1939, into a force of more than 30 divisions including units of every type.  Their battlefield reputation varied widely, from the premier armoured divisions which formed Germanys utterly reliable spearheads on both main fronts, to low quality anti partisan units.  The divisions covered in this second of four titles include the first mountain and cavalry units. and two of the remarkable new Panzer divisions raised in the great 1943 expansion.  Illustrated with rare photographs from private collections, the text details their organisation, uniforms and insignia, and summarises their battle record.

The Waffen-SS (1) 1. to 5. Divisions by Gordon Williamson.

Despite being disdained by the German Armys professional officer corps, the military branch if the Nazi SS security organisation grew from an initial strength of only a handful of battalions at the outbreak of war in 1939 to hundreds of thousands of troops in dozens of divisions.  The battlefield reputation of the premier armoured and mechanised divisions would become second to none; lavishly equipped and regarded as utterly reliable, they were thrown into many desperate battles on both Western and Eastern fronts, often achieving remarkable results.  Illustrated with rare photographs, this is the first of four Men at Arms titles detailing the organisation, uniforms and insignia of the Waffen SS.

Paperback Book

Axis Cavalry in World War II by Dr Jeffrey T Fowler.

It is often forgotten that the German Wehrmacht of 1939 - 1945 relied heavily upon horses.  Not only was the majority of Army transport and much of the artillery dependent on draught horse teams; the Germans also kept a horse-mounted cavalry division in the field until the end of 1941.  After withdrawing it, they discovered a need to revive and greatly expand their cavalry units in 1943 - 45.  The Army and Waffen-SS cavalry proved their worth on the Russian Front, supported by other Axis cavalry contingents - Romanian, Hungarian, Italian, and locally recruited.  In this book an experienced horseman describes that last generation of horse soldiers in a text supported by tables, photographs, and meticulous colour plates.

Germanys Eastern Front Allies (2) Baltic Forces by C Caballero Jurado & N Thomas PhD.

The Baltic nations - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - enjoyed a brief independence between the World Wars before being annexed by the USSR in 1940.  The grim experience of Soviet occupation made it inevitable that after the German invasion of Russia in 1941 they would fight beside the Wehrmacht as allies against the Red Army, while always hoping for restored independence.  That hope was crushed again in 1944-45; yet Forest Brother guerrillas continued to fight against hopeless odds for years after the second Soviet occupation.  This extraordinary story is illustrated here with rare photos, insignia charts, tables of units and detailed uniform plates.

Japanese Pacific Island Defenses 1941 - 45 by Gordon L Rottman.

The prolonged and bloody fighting for control of the Japanese occupied Pacific Islands in World War II is a key point in 20th century warfare.  No two islands were alike in the systems and nature of their defensive emplacements, and local improvisation and command preferences affected both materials used and defensive models.  This title provides a detailed and authoritative examination of the establishment, construction and effectiveness of Japanese temporary and semi permanent crew served weapons positions and individual and small unit fighting positions.  Integrated obstacles and minefields, camouflage and the changing defensive principles are also covered.

U-Boat Bases and Bunkers 1941 - 45 by Gordon Williamson

Few of the massive military structures built by Germany during World War II are as impressive as the U-Boat bases and bunkers in Germany, Norway and France.  This title takes a close look at the formidable edifices built on the French coast (Brest, Lorient, St Nazaire, La Pallice, Bordeaux) in Norway (Bergen, Trondheim) and Germany (Kiel, Hamburg, Helgoland) and also focuses on the huge Valentin factory complex at Bremen, which manufactured the new type XXI electro-boats.  Bunker protective systems, such as camouflage, light and heavy flak installations and nearby air cover, are also examined, as well as resident flotillas and the fate of the bases at wars end.

V - 2 Ballistic Missile 1942 - 52 by Steven J Zaloga

The German A - 4 ballistic missile, better known by its propaganda name of V-2, was the world's first successful ballistic missile, breaking through the atmosphere to reach its target quicker.  It was a forerunner of Cold War ballistic missiles and its combat use in 1944-45 set the pattern for the use of Scud ballistic missiles in recent decades.  The V-2 offensive lasted from September 1944 until March 1945 with over 3,000 rockets being launched.  This book will examine the combat record of the V-2 in World War II, with a special focus on how a German missile battalion actually prepared and fired its missiles.

The 25 - Pounder Field Gun 1939-72 by Chris Henry and Mike Fuller

Of all the British guns in use during the Second World War, the 25-pounder was the one that best represented Britain's armed forces. It was adaptable, packed a powerful punch and, above all, it was reliable. This book provides a full combat history of a gun that was used in every theatre of the Second World War and saw extensive service in the post-war years, particularly in Korea and during the Malaysian emergency. The last 25 pounder gun to see action in the British Army was one used by SAS troops at Mirbat, Oman, in 1972.

88mm FlaK 18/36/37/41 & PaK 43 1936-45 by John Norris

The German 88mm was by far the most famous and versatile artillery weapon of World War II.  It was first used as an anti-aircraft weapon by the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War and saw further service in the German invasions of Poland and France, where it was first used in its anti-tank role.  This role was particularly successful and the 88 became feared by tank crews from North Africa to Russia.  Apart from these two main roles the 88mm also served as the main weapon on late-war German tanks, as a self-propelled gun, and even as an aerial weapon.  This book covers all these variants, explaining their design, development and operational use.

Infantry Mortars of World War II by John Norris

The mortar has proved to be one of the most influential and prevalent infantry support weapons of the 20th century.  Throughout the course of World War II many different varieties of this weapon were used by the six main protagonists in the war: Britain, the USA, the Soviet Union, Germany, Italy and Japan.  Although the concept of the mortar remained constant, calibres and usage varied enormously according to tactical use and terrain.  This title covers all variants from the British 3-in.-equipped 'Heavy Weapon Companies', through to the Soviet 12cm mortars, which were incorporated into the Tank Corps for the storming of Berlin in 1945.

Flags of the Third Reich by Brian L Davis.

Perhaps no other symbols create such striking images of the Second World War as the flags and emblems of Hitlers Germany. On 16 March 1936 the Fuhrers decree gave new colours to the Wehrmacht. Later the Waffen-SS were equipped with flags and insignia even more redolent of Nazi ideology. Many non-German volunteer contingents were raised to serve alongside the German forces: primarily fighting on the Eastern Front, these units were also equipped with flags and insignia inspired by Nazi imagery, but also reflecting their own national identities. This title provides an unrivalled reference to the flags of the Third Reich. including the Wehrmacht Waffen-SS and Party and Police Units.

Fallen Eagle: The Last Days of the Third Reich by Robin Cross

After more than four years of total war the armies of Europe were deeply weary. The Allies were determined to end the war in Europe quickly and with as little bloodshed as possible. But the German's, though they could see the war was lost, were by no means prepared to yield. Indeed, the fighting during 1945 was to be some of the bitterest of the war.

In the East, Stalin's mighty war machine began its great offensive. Beginning in swirling fog and snow, the Soviet steamroller crashed through the German lines on the Vistula, 125 miles south of Warsaw. Soon Russian armoured columns were driving across the Polish plain towards the Oder, Germany's historic frontier with the East, creating panic in East Prussia. In the West, Eisenhower and Montgomery joined the race to destroy the heart of Nazi Germany and defend Europe against Stalin's vaulting ambition. So began one of the most crucial years in the history of the world which was to climax in the desperate battle for Berlin. The gripping story of the final days of the Third Reich is told in graphic detail - the unfolding drama revealed through the eyes of soldier and civilian, private, general and refugee.

In a sweeping panorama, which finds room for the individual human drama within the broad sweep of battle, Robin Cross paints an unforgettable picture of a world in chaos. By the end of 1945, Europe had new frontiers, friends had become deadly enemies and an uneasy peace threatened to transform Cold War into a thrid world war. This is the story of how the Eagle was finally toppled from the roof of the Berlin chancellery and the Russian bear stretched out its claws to seize a Europe laid waste.

The Struggle for Europe by Chester Wilmot.

This classic account of the allied victory in Europe in 1945 has been called the best single volume history of the war. The Daily Telegraph described it as A classic of contemporary history. It is impossible to praise Mr Wilmots achievement too highly. Michael Howard says in his introduction that the result of Wilmots labours was a book which deserves to rank as highly as a journalistic scoop as it does as a work of history. Certainly the pacey readability has the flavour of contemporary journalism as he describes the build up to the invasion of Europe, the scenes at the beach-head and in the bocage of Normandy, as well as the disputes among the Allies, the Anglo-American differences over Grand Strategy and, above all, the friction between Hitler and his generals which culminated in the plot of July 20th 1944, and the final crushing pincer movements of the Russians and the Anglo-American forces which brought victory in Europe.

Winston Churchill by Henry Pelling.

Winston Spencer Churchill was the most extraordinary combination of soldier and statesman. Of aristocratic birth, he enlisted as a cavalry officer, saw action at the Battle of Omdurman and, as a civilian, reported the Boer War for the Manchester Guardian. Captured by the Boers, he escaped dramatically, and the popular appeal of his exploits helped him to gain a Parliamentary seat.

At the outset of the First World War he became First Lord of the Admiralty and acted as the brilliant initiator of the Antwerp and Gallipoli campaigns. These failed to bear fruit and he became a Colonel in the front line on the Western Front. At the end of the war, his political career followed a chequered path until he received the call to become Prime Minister in May 1940. In this role he proved to be the saviour of his country.

Field Marshal the Viscount Slim (1891-1970) was blessed with none of the advantages of wealth and social position that eased the progress of many army officers. With no armoury apart form his integrity, his personality and his intellect, he rose to the pinnacle of his profession as one of the finest fighting generals of World War II on either side.

Ronald Lewins prizewinning biography charts Bill Slims life from humble beginnings through World War I, the inter-war years in India to his leadership of the 14th Army in Burma. Here, from 1943-45, he led the defeated Forgotten Army to victory, recapturing Burma in a series of brilliant campaings - second Arakan, Imphal, Kohima and Mandalay. Beloved by his troops, even the gallant but unruly Australians, with whom he had an uncanny understanding, he served as CIGS, as an ever popular Governor-General of Australia, and as Governor and Constable of Windsor Castle.

The Right of the Line by John Terraine.

The Right of the Line describes the role of the Royal Air Force during the European War of 1939-1945. In his best book yet John Terraine shows how the RAF, which in 1939 was small and inadequate for the task it was called upon to perform had, by the end of the war, taken up its position on the right of the line, the vanguard and position of honour.

Most Secret War by R.V. Jones

Most Secret War is R.V. Jones' account of his part in British Scientific Intelligence between 1939 and 1949. It was his responsibility to anticipate German applications of science to warfare, so that their new weapons could be countered before they were used. Much of his work had to do with radio navigation, as in the Battle of the Beams, with radar, as in the Allied Bomber Offensive and in the preparations for D-Day and in the war at sea.

He was also in charge of intelligence against the V-1 (flying bomb) and the V-2 (rocket) retaliation weapons and, although the Germans were some distance from success, against their nuclear developments.

Book serial number W22. Price £4.99. Fully illustrated paperback with 556 pages.
