General Craufurd and his
Light Division by Rev Alexander H Craufurd.
A military biography of one of Wellingtons most celebrated
lieutenants in the Peninsula War recounting the exploits of his Light
Division, written by Craufurds grandson, who states that the book is
intended to be essentially light reading and salts it with interesting and
amusing anecdotes. Major-General Robert Craufurd served in Spain under Sir
John Moore, and subsequently commanded the Light Division under
Wellington, being mortally wounded in the storming of the Fortress of
Ciudad Roderigo. The book comes complete with a fine portrait of Craufurd
and facsimiles of letters praising him from Moore and Wellington.
Illustrated paperback with 298 pages.

Fortresses
of the Peninsular War 1808-14 by Ian Fletcher.
In the course of the Peninsular
War, Wellingtons army fought several hard battles and smaller actions,
but it was the bloody sieges that troubled them more than anything
else. Indeed, the performance of his army during the sieges was
probably the most disappointing aspect of what was otherwise an
extremely successful campaign. Taking 1808 as its starting point,
this title deals with the fortress sieges that involved Wellingtons
Anglo-Portuguese army, and concentrates on four key sites in particular
(Cludad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Burgos and San Sebastian). All of these
played a vital role in the war due to their strategically important
positions. It documents both the sieges and the storming of the
fortresses, as well as the general role of the fortress in Spain.

paperback with approximately 65 pages.

The
Lines of Torres Vedras 1809-11 by Ian Fletcher
Following the battle of Bussaco
on 27th September 1810, Wellingtons heavily outnumbered troops began
their retreat towards Lisbon. By the evening of 9th October the
British and Portuguese had started to withdraw behind a line of
defensive works that had been built to the north of the town.
These were not the rudimentary field works that the French anticipated,
but an enormous network of forts, batteries and redoubts whose
construction had been started the previous November - the Lines of
Torres Vedras. The 30 mile wide Lines utilised the areas natural
defences, damming rivers, scarping hillsides, blocking roads and
establishing forts upon almost all of the hills. This title
describes their design, creation and effectiveness.
Part of the Osprey Fortress Series. Illustrated
paperback with approximately 65 pages.

Wellington: The
Iron Duke by Richard Holmes
Wellington: The Iron Duke tells the exhilarating story
- both on and off the battlefield - of Britain's greatest ever soldier.
Wellington began his life as Arthur Wesley, a shy,
indolent boy from an impoverished Anglo-Irish noble family. His was
a childhood in which the violin featured more prominently than the
musket. He ended his life as the 'Iron Duke', the man who had saved
Europe from the tyranny of Napoleon and who served as Prime Minister of
Britain at a crucial time in history. At his death, Queen Victoria
wept and called him the greatest man the nineteenth century had produced.
In this compelling book - and accompanying BBC series -
Richard Holmes charts this extraordinary progress, travelling from the
ruins of the family seat in Ireland to the plains of India, where
Wellesley (the family name was changed by his elder brother) first gained
his reputation as a brilliant and courageous commander. But
Wellesley's real genius was proved on the unforgiving landscape of Spain
and Portugal during the Peninsula War - whose horrors are described here
with stunning historical precision and sympathy. Holmes explains how
Wellesley beat Napoleon's generals again and again, making him a national
hero and ultimately winning him the title Duke of Wellington. But he
still has to face the ultimate challenge - the fight against Napoleon in
person on the field of Waterloo.

The Armies of
Wellington by Philip J. Haythornthwaite
This
is not another account of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington. Rather, it
is an account of how he structured, equipped, utilised and adapted the
forces under his command in the very different campaigns in which he
fought.
Philip
Haythorthwaite's deep knowledge of his subject and his awareness of the
data and comment absent from similar books ensures that this volume
provides a uniquely fresh approach to the assessment of this colourful
military period. The make up, armament, training, recruitment and
disposition of troops in the Peninsula and Waterloo Campaigns are fully
described.
