Tarawa 1943, the
Turning of the Tide by Derrick Wright
The Americans would not take
Tarawa with a million men in a hundred years.' Such was the boast of
Admiral Shibasaki, commander of the elite Special Navy Landing Force
charged with the defence of the island of Betio on the Tarawa Atoll. The
Marines of the 2nd Division set out to prove him wrong, and despite
serious planning errors, they launched a pioneering amphibious invasion of
unprecedented ferocity. They would pay heavily for their bravery. The
attack resulted in 3,000 marine casualties at the hands of a garrison of
some 5,000, dispelling forever any American illusions about the fighting
quality of the Japanese.
