Rorkes Drift by Michael Glover.

The Defence of Rorkes Drift has gone down in history as one of the grandest heroic actions of the British colonial wars. About a hundred men defeated an enemy force thirty or forty times their size, and eleven of the defenders were awarded Britains highest  military decoration - the Victoria Cross.

The action has been immortalised in the film Zulu, and is a familiar name to many who have no idea why it was fought. Michael Glover shows how this undoubted act of bravery was exploited for political ends, and why an event of little consequence found its way into the National Hagiography of Battles.

Rorke's Drift 1879, 'Pinned Like Rats in a Hole' by Ian Knight

Not only the most famous engagement of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, but one of the best known battles in the history of the British Army, Rorke's Drift was an epic struggle against overwhelming odds. It pitted more than 3,000 Zulus, fresh from their triumph at Isandhlwana, against the mission station's tiny garrison, a mere 150 British and Imperial soldiers. Both sides fought with extraordinary courage and determination, and no less than 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded for this one battle.
