The Heyday of British Steam.  London - The Isle of Wight - Scotland

Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of amateur cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity.  This series is a collection of those shots and Part V covers the London area, the Isle of Wight and Scotland.  Until the mid 1960s, the Isle of Wight still depended on small Victorian 0-4-4 tank engines of the O2 Class to operate its island network.  Our cameramen were on hand to record some of these locomotives.  Back on the mainland we travel via Southampton and Brighton to the London area where steam engines are seen at several of the main line terminus stations as well as in the suburbs.  A brief look at Bletchley is followed by a comprehensive journey around Scotland before line closures and dieselisation were to change the countrys railway scene for ever. All the shots, taken in the 1950s and 1960s, are totally original and are in full colour with sound track and commentary.

The Heyday of British Steam.  London - South Midlands - South West

Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of amateur cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity.  This series is a collection of some of those shots and Part I covers London, the South Midlands and the South West.  Our journey starts at Rugby and continues via Leamington Spa, Banbury, Oxford and Reading.  From Reading we head west, looking at Swindon Works shed and station.  We pause at Bath and Bristol before a nostalgic look at the former Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway.  From there its London via Salisbury and Basingstoke.  All the shots, taken in the 1950s and 1960s, are totally original and are in full colour with sound track and commentary.

The Heyday of British Steam.  East Midlands - The North East of England

Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of amateur cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity.  This series is a collection of some of those shots and Part II covers the East Midlands and the North East of England.  We begin at Leicester at the Great Central Station where experimental gas turbine locomotive GT3 is seen in the shed.  Then its north to Derby, via Loughborough and Nottingham.  From Nottingham we join the East Coast main line at Grantham and experience the majesty of the Gresley Pacifics at work, before moving north to Doncaster and York.  A brief visit to the Thirsk and Darlington area and then we cross to West Yorkshire for some steam trains on the magnificent Settle and Carlisle Line.  All the shots, taken in the 1950s and 1960s, are totally original and are in full colour with sound track and commentary.

The Heyday of British Steam.  Birmingham - The North Midlands - Wales

Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity.  This series is a collection of some of those shots and Part III covers the Birmingham area and the North Midlands and Central Wales.  We begin at Nuneaton and Coventry, witnessing both areas before the erection of overhead wires.  From Coventry we move to Birmingham Station and see New Street Station pre-building.  A brief visit to Saltley Station and the Camp Hill gradient is followed by a compilation of trains filmed at Birminghams other main line station, Snow Hill.  From Birmingham we move north to Stafford on the West Coast Main Line and then west to Shrewsbury.  Part III concludes with some hard working steam hauled trains on Talerddig bank in mid Wales.  All the shots, taken in the 1950s and 1960s, are totally original and are in full colour with sound track and commentary.

Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity.  This series is a collection of some of those shots and Part IV covers the West Midlands and the North of England.  We begin at Gloucester where the diminutive former G.W.R. 0-4-2 tank engines were still working push and pull trains.  From Gloucester we head to the western suburbs of Birmingham via the famous Lickey Incline where heavyweight expresses could be seen struggling with the 1 in 37 gradient.  A look at Wolverhamptons Low Level Station before it closed, is followed by a journey to Manchester via Stoke on Trent, Crewe and Stockport.  After Manchester we cross the Pennines and end our journey at Sheffields Victoria Station where Directors 04s and K Class moguls were still hard at work.  All the shots, taken in the 1950s and 1960s, are totally original and are in full colour with sound track and commentary.

British Rail Journeys.   Northern England

From the heart of the Yorkshire Dales to the majestic city of Carlisle, this programme takes you on one of Britains most outstanding scenic journeys, visiting the many tourist attractions along the way.  Ancient castles, falconry, rare animals, and delightful towns and villages are all overlooked by spectacular limestone scenery, wild fells and the beautiful unspoilt greenery of the Wide Eden Valley.  Now reprieved from the threat of closure, both British Rail Sprinters and private steam locomotives continue in the renowned tradition of the most loved of Britains railways.

From the cathedral city of Exeter to the rugged cliffs of Lands End, this programme takes you to one of Britains most outstanding scenic journeys, visiting the many tourist attractions along the way.  Historic towns and cities, small fishing villages, countless beaches and quite a few surprises too, all framed by the beautiful backdrop of sea and moor.  Carried along by Intercity and steam railway, this is a journey through the ancient heart of Englands South West that you will never forget.

British Rail Journeys.  Blaenau Ffestiniog 

The Ffestiniog Railway, starting on the glorious Welsh Coastline at Pothmadog, protected by the imposing castles of Harlech and Criccieth, is a memorable journey through the Snowdonia National Park.  From Harbour Station at Porthmadog, the train climbs through the sleepy pastures and luscious forest, skirting lakes and waterfalls.  clinging to and tunneling through the sides of mountains, the track takes in horseshoe bends which include a complete spiral. This area is so remote that the train is occasionally required to stop at isolated cottages whose inhabitants depend entirely upon the railway.  The journey covers the 13.5 miles from Portmadog, rising to over 700 feet above sea level at Bleanau Ffestiniog.

British Rail Journeys.   North Wales

From the Roman city of Chester to the craggy bay of Aberystwyth, this programme takes you on one of Britains most outstanding scenic journeys, visiting the many tourist attractions along the way.  Roman ruins and mighty castles, sun centres and alternative technology, local crafts, beaches and mountains are all to be found along the magnificent Cambrian coast or enclosed within the Snowdonia National Park.  Travelling by Intercity, Sprinter, and the great little steam trains of Wales, this is an amazingly varied and unforgettable journey into the very heart of Wales.

From the rolling hills of Perthshire to the jagged mountains of Skye, this programme takes you on one of Britains most outstanding scenic railway journeys, visiting the various tourist attractions along the way.  Glass blowing, whiskey distilling, Highland Games, and beautiful towns and villages, all amidst the splendour of the Beautiful Scottish Highlands.  Finally British Rails famous Class 37 diesels carry you along the final stage from Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh.

Steam Around the World.   The Western Europe Archives

Firstly we travel to Southern France and take a look at the steam locomotives that are still in operation today.  From the Brittany Peninsular along the Channel Coast to Paris, to Picardy.  We see some fine examples of French steam, including the famous Golden Arrow.  In Dieppe, we see a rail terminal that serves the main port.  We take a close look at an extensive network of city trains in Brussels, and later move on to a combination of steam, electric and diesel used for heavy industry in Luxembourg.  We visit E Class locomotives in Italy.  Three different types of gauge are on offer in Greece, and we also travel to Turkey, before finally ending our journey in Portugal.  This rare archive steam footage was lovingly captured on 16mm film by the famous American railroad enthusiast Harry P Dodge.  Along with the rest of the series, it provides the unique and incredible story of the worlds railways in the 60s and early 70s.

Rails all the way from Cape to Cairo were once the dream of Victorian pioneer Cecil Rhodes.  In 1965 and 1970, the dying years of the Age of Steam, Harry Dodge visited and recorded this incredible African legacy.  Throughout Central and Southern Africa, the uncompromising terrain spawned some spectacular feats of engineering.  Many of these, including the famous Victoria Falls bridge, are captured when huge fleets of Garratts still ruled supreme.  Malawi Railway, Rhodesian Railways and Franco-Ethiopian Railways are all featured, as well as the steam trains of South Africa, Mozambique, Angola and the Sudan.  This rare archive steam footage was lovingly captured on 16mm film by the famous American railroad enthusaist Harry P Dodge.  Along with the rest of the series, it provides the unique and incredible story of the worlds railways in the 60s and early 70s.

In this programme, Harry Dodge has captured the incredible variety of Asian steam, commencing in India with Bengali broad and narrow gauge steam, the exquisite Darjeeling Railway (considered by many to be the worlds finest railway), Jaipurs meter gauge system, and locomotives ranging from the Pacific to a Maharajahs private train.  This is contrasted with Japanese preserved locos of Thailand, Indonesian Tank engines and Malaysian light steam, while in Australia and New Zealand we find an equally delightful assortment of gauges and rolling stock.  This rare archive steam footage was lovingly captured on 16mm film by the famous American railroad enthusiast, Harry P Dodge.  Along with the rest of the series, it provides the unique and incredible story of the worlds railways in the 60s and early 70s.

In the 1960s Harry Dodge travelled behind the Iron Curtain, to capture the railways of a bygone age - before the collapse of communism and the demise of steam.  with smoke belching forth across every country, this programme explores the unique record he left behind, with rare footage from Yugoslavia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia and Eastern Germany.  Steam freight and passenger trains, are included, as well as tank engines and turn tables, and everything from might 2-10-0s to tiny narrow gauge locos; whilst not forgetting all the activity behind the scenes.  This rare archive steam footage was lovingly captured on 16mm film by the famous American railroad enthusiast, Harry P Dodge.  Along with the rest of the series, it provides the unique and incredible story of the worlds railways in the 60s and early 70s.

From the late Teddy Bostons Rectory Railway at Cadeby to the ancient and modern at Crewe Heritage Centre, this programme contains an enormous range of railway interest. It samples the activities of the long established Severn Valley Railway, as well as the massive task undertaken by Peak Rail, re-opening their line through the beautiful Derbyshire Dales. The unique collection of trains at the National Tramway Museum, Crich and the impressive locos of the Great Central Railway are also featured.

The North East is a Mecca for keen railway enthusiasts. It includes the only remaining rope hauled incline, at Bowes, as well as two of Britains most extensive preserved railways in the North Yorkshire Moors and Keighley and Worth Valley. The exceptional National Railway Museum situated in the historic city of York contrasts with a more specialised museum at Hull, while the Middleton Railway provides a welcome escape from the busy centre of Leeds.

The Restored Railways of Britain - North West England.

The North West of England is the cradle of industrial and railway history and can still muster a varied and impressive range of railways and steam power. The region features the ideal tourist line Tlaal Ratty, running along the Esks wooded valley into the heart of the Lake District. There is the award winning East Lancashire and South Tyndale Railways, and loco collections at Carnforth and Southport have connections to BRs Main Line. Exhibited in the power hall of Manchesters Museum of Science and Industry are steam engines and exhibits of all types and sizes, while at Blackpool we find the UKs sole surviving street tramway system.

The Restored Railways of Britain - South East England.

The South East is rich in privately preserved steam railways, ranging from the famous standard gauge Bluebell Railway, which was taken over by enthusiasts over 30 years ago, to the 13 ½ mile long Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch, the most fully equipped 15 inch gauge railway in the modern world. This programme also contains the old world charm of a wine and dine train on the Lavender Line, industrial narrow gauge nostalgia on the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Railway and reflections of the expanding Kent and East Sussex Railway.
