The
Fortifications of Malta 1530 - 1945 by Charles Stephenson.
The island of Malta occupies a
pivotal position in the Mediterranean, forming an outpost between North
Africa and the soft underbelly of Europe. Such has been its
strategic importance throughout the years that it must be one of the
most fortified places in the world. Following the successful
defence of the island during the Great Siege of 1565m the Knights
Hospitalier built new walls and fortifications, though these came to
naught when Napoleon occupied Malta in 1798. Retaken by the
British in 1800, the defences were modernised throughout the 19th
century and the islands final test came during World War II. This
book examines all these different styles of fortification from the 16th
to the 20th century.
Part of the Osprey Fortress Series. Illustrated
paperback with approximately 65 pages.

Naval
Shipbuilders of the World
From the Age of Sail to
the Present day. by Robert J Winklareth.
While the design and service histories of warships are
well covered in print, until now there has been no single-volume guide to
the companies and state yards which built them. This encyclopaedic
new work fills that gap, with concise 'biographies' of the shipbuilders,
describing their corporate development, highlights in their histories, and
listing the major ships they built. International in coverage, the
book is divided by country, by region and by yard, and is
illustrated throughout with maps and plans showing the locations of the
builders and the ground layout of the most important shipyards at
significant dates in their history. The book also includes details
of naval bases and repair facilities, while a general introduction points
out the salient features of warship development over three centuries, from
wood and canvas to the technology of steam, steel and electronics in order
to explain the changes in the world's shipbuilding industries. this
comprehensive guide has a place on the bookshelf of any naval historian or
enthusiast.

Shore
Establishments of the Royal Navy, Compiled by Lt. Cdr. B. Warlow, R.N.
Shore Establishments of the Royal Navy is a
comprehensive summary of all the named shore establishments and static
ships of the Royal Navy from the beginning of the 19th Century. The
aim of the book is to fill a significant gap that existed in reference
works. To do this has meant compiling over 300 entries, and
including the location of the establishment, its task and dates when it
operated. Some existed for a few days, and others were planned but
never commissioned. These latter have been included for
completeness. Because the Royal Navy established bases abroad, the
shore establishments of the New and Old Commonwealth Navies have been
included to clarify their position. Similarly Commonwealth (and
Allied, Free French etc), establishments set up in Great Britain in World
War Two have also been included. Nominal Depot Ships, a device required by
the Naval Discipline Act, and which led to some shore establishments being
'sunk', have also been included. Many establishments changed their
names, others their task, and others their location. Such details
can be found here. At the end of the book is a gazzetteer, so that
readers can find which establishments were located at a particular
place. The opportunity has been taken to incorporate unnamed Royal
Naval Air Stations of World War One and other unnamed establishments into
the gazzetteer. All this is tabulated into this gem of a book, which
is a must for any serious researcher. This second edition has been
completely rewritten to take the opportunity to include extra detail
discovered during further researches and includes a further 400 names.

Sheerness Naval
Dockyard & Garrison by David T Hughes.
At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Sheerness
was simply uninhabited marshland on the north-western tip of the Isle of
Sheppey, in the estuary of the River Thames at the mouth of the river
Medway. In the 1660s, its future as a naval dockyard began in the
form of a ramshackle depot and its strategic importance was soon realised
by the Admiralty. Sheerness played an essential role as a site for
re-victualling and repairs for the warships that would otherwise find it
cumbersome and time consuming to reach the royal naval dockyards upriver
at Deptford, Woolwich and Chatham. During the twentieth century, the
dockyard was a base for torpedo-boats and torpedo-boat destroyers, and
subsequently minesweepers, that would play significant roles in the naval
conflicts of both world wars. In the early party of the nineteenth
century, Sheerness underwent a great rebuilding, to plans drawn up by John
Rennie, forming a rich collection of the fine Georgian and early Victorian
structures which would constitute an important part of the nation's great
maritime heritage. Over 200 images recount the history of Sheerness
Naval Dockyard and its garrison since their foundation in the
mid-seventeenth century until the official closing ceremony in 1960,
including impressive images of the venerable old hulk Cornwallis, a
survivor from the time of the Napoleonic wars.

The Clyde at War by Brian D Osborne & Ronald Armstrong
The River Clyde and its estuary played a central part in both the
1914-1918 and 1939-45 World Wars. The major air base at Prestwick, the
centre for commando training at Inverary, the terminal point for Atlantic
convoys at the Tail of the Bank and of course the Gareloch, the major
British military port of the Second World War, were all of vital
importance to the Allied cause. On both banks of the river the ships that
fed and protected Britain were launched - from the mighty Hood, most
famous of all Britain's warships, to the humble escort and convoy vessels
which ferried supplies and men back and forth across the Atlantic. It was
also the scene of human tragedy in the form of the Clydebank and Greenock
blitzes.
Told primarily through numerous period photographs - many never seen
before - and based on a wide variety of written sources.

Portsmouth In Defence
of the Realm by John Sadden
Portsmouth Harbour has offered a secure anchorage for fighting fleets
since Roman times. The growth of 'Pompey' from an adjunct to the ancient
military centre at Portchester to the world's premier naval base in
Britain's imperial heyday is fully explained and described in this new
book, which, for the first time, brings together the history of the
harbour's fortifications, military garrison, dockyard, naval and air
defence establishments.
Not confined to the evolution of facilities and fortifications, the
author's narrative highlights the many defensive and offensive innovations
that were developed locally, and the parts played by such individuals as
Jonas Hanway, Agnes Weston, Sarah Robinson, Admiral Sir Jacky Fisher, Dr
James Lind and William & Robert Froude.

The Clyde Submarine Base compiled by Keith Hall
The Clyde Submarine Base was officially commissioned in 1967. The
Faslane site had originally been used as a military port during the Second
World War, and was built and manned by the Army. HMS Adamant, the Depot
ship of the 3rd Submarine Squadron, first anchored in Faslane Bay in 1957,
and over the years the base has increased in size to accommodate the
growing sophistication of the squadron submarines and the increasing
number of hulls.
This book traces the development of the base in unsurpassed
pictorial detail, from its initial use by the Army to October 1996, when
the base became HM Naval Base Clyde. Chronicling the histories of the two
submarine squadrons based at Faslane, the 3rd and 10th Squadrons, this
collection is sure to provoke nostalgia among submariners and personnel
who have served at the base, while providing a fascinating insight for
those not so familiar with its story.

The Story of Greenwich
by Clive Aslet
Greenwich, the site of Britain's celebration of the new millennium, has
been an emblem of British history for over a thousand years. A seat
of learning and intellectual enquiry, exploration and discovery, it
resonates with echoes of great characters and stirring national
events. The Royal Observatory, constructed in Greenwich Park in the
1670s, has been the origin of standard time around the world. The
ancient royal palace at Greenwich was the birthplace of thee monarchs:
Henry VIII, Mary Tudor and Elizabeth I. For all these regal
associations, Blackheath, at the top of the park, has often featured as
the scene of insurrection and revolt. It was here that Wat Tyler
assembled his band of a hundred thousand rebels against the Poll
Tax. In the year 2000 Greenwich will be as much a focus of national
sentiment as it was in December 1805 when the body of Admiral Lord Nelson
was brought to the Royal Naval Hospital after his death at
Trafalgar. The funeral that followed was one of the most dramatic
state occasions ever to have been staged in Britain. The seventeenth
and eighteenth centuries bestowed upon Greenwich an incomparable parade of
great and innovative buildings by Inigo Jones, wren, Hawksmoor and
Vanbrugh. With the building of the Millennium Dome, the place
continues its tradition of pioneering architecture. A favourite
haunt of Dickens and Gladstone, and home to London's first railway,
Greenwich also throbbed with the energy of the Victorian age. Using
beautiful colour illustrations throughout, Clive Aslet presents a
beguiling and charismatic portrait of Greenwich and a history of England
through the story of this unique English town.
