The Story of the Spitfire.

With the courage and skill of fighter aces like Johnnie Johnson, Sailor Malan and Bobby Tuck, the Supermarine Spitfire helped change the course of the war in favour of the Allies.  The only match for the Luftwaffes Messerschmitt Bf109, the Spitfire played a major role in the success of the Battle of Britain.  The classic combination of airframe, Rolls Royce Merlin engine and dual cannon/ machine gun armament struck terror into the hearts of the enemys most fearless flyers and won the aircraft a place in history as a timeless thoroughbred fighter.  The Spitfire fought in the front line throughout the war, and rightly remains an aviation legend today.  Combining dramatic wartime film with colour footage of surviving Spitfires in flight, this is the definitive documentary of a thoroughbred fighter.

The Story of the Hurricane.

Its eight wing-mounted Colt-Brownings spitting flame, the Hawker Hurricane swooped to dispatch over two thirds of all enemy aircraft destroyed in the Battle of Britain.  Courageous squadron commander Douglas Bader, 14 - kill her Cobber Kain, Ginger Lacey - the top Battle of Britain ace with 18 victims - and many other RAF pilots owed their reputations and their lives to this toughest mount of all.  The Hurricane was outnumbered but never outclassed, designed to hit the enemy hard, absorb tremendous punishment yet live to fight another day.  Featuring colour footage of the last surviving aircraft, alongside original combat film, this is the definitive documentary of a fighter plane that truly changed the course of history.

No combat aircraft ever achieved perfection, but at the time of its debut, the Fw190 probably came as near to this elusive goal as any other fighter.  This aircraft was undoubtedly the finest warplane ever produced by Germany and from the moment it entered the theatre of war, the Fw190 achieved the slim margin of superiority over the RAF aircraft in fighter versus fighter combat.  In the ground attack role, it subsequently proved its ability to absorb considerable punishment and in return deliver a more than powerful punch.

Junkers JU87.

Acclaimed by the Germans as the scourge of Europe, the aircraft that conquered nations, the supreme weapon, the Junkers Ju87 dive bomber attained greater notoriety than any other weapon in the arsenal with which Germany launched the Second World War.  It was more widely discussed and aroused greater controversy than many other more worthy aircraft.  It was slow, unwieldy and the most natural prey of the fighter, yet within the first nine months of the war the Ju87 had acquired a legendary reputation.

The German Luftwaffe entered World War II in September 1939, employing as its main day fighter the Messerschmitt Bf109, one of the classic fighter aircraft designs of all time.  This programme covers the operations of the Bf109 in its role on all fronts to 1942 and the early missions by the Fw190 over France and the English Channel.

The concept of a long range, fast, heavy fighter, or zerstorer lay close to the heart of Hermann Goering during the early years of the growth of the new German air force.  Using combat footage from all fronts and from film shot in the skies by night and day over Germany, this programme provides a dramatic account of the contribution made by the heavy fighters of the Luftwaffe in World War Two.

The menacing, gull winged Stuka dive bomber, plunging vertically earthwards, its sirens wailing like banshees before releasing its bomb load, became the very embodiment of terror.  In this wide-ranging presentation the Stuka is seen in action on all fronts, as well as the Hs129s and Fw190 in action over Russia.

The Me262 represented the cutting edge of a new generation of highly advanced combat types, employing jet, and rocket propulsion.  Paralleling these aircraft types in the spring of 1945 were the first of Hitlers revenge weapons, the V-1 Flying Bomb and the advanced V-2 Rocket, that were intended to turn the tide of the war.

German Fighter Aircraft of WW2 1942 - 1945.

For the day fighters of the Luftwaffe, the dominant reality in the period 1943-1945 was the massive growth in the daylight bombing raids of Germany by the United States. While other theatres did have a call on the fighter wings, by far and away the bulk of German day fighters in this period was employed in the air defence of Germany. The core of the day fighter units continued to be built around later variants of the Bf-109 and the Fw-190, which were being continually modified and upgraded with new armament combinations and employing new tactics to force down the U.S. heavy bombers. The reality of the air-war over Germany is demonstrated in this programme, illustrating the battles fought by the Luftwaffe day fighter squadrons in their attempts to frustrate ever growing U.S. and allied bomber raids.

Bombers and Bombing Raids 1939 - 1942.

The German Luftwaffe entered the Second World War with the worlds most effective bomber force, built around the Heinkel He-111 and Dornier D0-17 medium bombers, and the new Junkers Ju-88 Schnellbomber. From its outset, the new Luftwaffe was planned as a tactical instrument, designed to provide air support to the army in what was assumed would be a short war. In this programme, which covers combat operations from North Africa through to Northern Norway and the Atlantic approaches to the Battle of Stalingrad, the role of the Luftwaffes bombing in the period of Germanys military expansion between 1939 and 1942 is told employing dramatic and graphic footage.

Bombers and Bombing Raids 1942 - 1945.

With the failure of the German Bomber B programme to find a replacement for the existing medium bombers, and the continuing problems with the Heinkel He-177, the Luftwaffe found itself being forced to keep in production types with which it had entered the war. The heavy losses in Russia and the growing effectiveness of allied air power was having a dire impact on the ability of the German bomber force to carry out its role. In 1943, when the Luftwaffe once more launched night bomber raids against the UK, the effectiveness of the night flyer defence led to very high losses. The decline of the Luftwaffe bombing arm is covered in the operations of the varied aircraft types employed, down to Germanys surrender in May, 1945. Also shown are flying boats and float planes, seen operating from the Mediterranean through to the Arctic Ocean.

De Havilland Mosquito - The Best British Multi-Role Combat Aircraft of the Second World War.

In 1941 the RAF was being pressed to fill new and ever more demanding roles in the war against Hitler.  Although first class modern fighters, Hurricanes and Spitfires, were in abundant supply, the Air Chiefs had a serious problem with the bomber force.  This uncomfortable gap was filled by a revolutionary fighter bomber, one of the most original and versatile designs of the entire war - the de Havilland Mosquito.
