Queen Victorias
Little Wars by Byron Farwell.
Queen Victorias Little Wars is the brilliantly
written account of what Kipling called The savage wars of peace and of the
men who fought in them. Throughout the whole of Queen Victorias
reign, there was not one single year in which British soldiers were not
fighting for her and her Empire. Byron Farwell records the
fascinating story of these little-known and extraordinary conflict - in
China, on the North-West Frontier, in Africa, in the Crimea, in Canada and
the great Indian Mutiny. This scholarly and vastly entertaining book
is written with rare narrative skill, demonstrating with wit and precision
the authors deep understanding of and affection for the Victorian
character in all its astonishing variety.

The Colonial Wars
Source Book by Philip J. Haythornthwaite
In the style which caused his Napoleonic Source Book and World War
One Source Book to become mainstays of military history since their
publication, Philip Haythornthwaite again brings his orderly thoroughness
to the evaluation of the colonial warfare which afflicted the world in the
19th century.
The author has a masterly grasp of the most important element of
grand strategy and the less vital but no less studied, aspects of uniform
and equipment. He provides the finest single volume narrative reference on
the subject with full coverage of events involving Britain, the Americas,
Africa, the Far East, the Indian sub-continent and Australasia.
In addition to matters of battlefield action, weapons and tactics,
the composition of the forces involved and the outcome and effect of
campaigns, The Colonial Wars Source Book provides biographical details of
the important personalities involved, an extensive glossary, a full
chapter of sources and sundry fascinating quotes and anecdotes which
interweave the entertaining and informative text.
Philip Haythornthwaite's earlier source books have been acclaimed as

Dervish by Philip
Warner.
Dervish is the story of the rise and fall of an African
Empire. It began in the Sudan in the 1880s with a localised Holy War
fought against decadent Turkish/Egyptian overlords. It was led by
Mohammed Ahmed Ibn Al-Sayid Abdullah - the Mahdi - and was soon to engulf
a million square miles of arid territory. It forced the hand of a
reluctant British Liberal Government, which was then approaching the
zenith of its imperial power, and led to the disaster of the infamous
Hicks expedition and the death of General Gordon at Khartoum.
Using first hand accounts and diaries of participants, the author
brilliantly describes the growth of the Mahdist movement and the
extraordinary devotion and discipline of the Dervish troops. set against
them, with stoic endurance, were the British, Egyptian and Sudanese
soldiers. The resulting fierce engagements inspired amazing feats of
courage and daring on both sides. The Dervish Empire survived the death of
the Mahdi by 13 years, ending at the Battle of Omdurman and Kitcheners
reconquest of Sudan.
