Marengo 1800, Napoleon's Day of Fate by David Hollins

osprey70.jpg (267832 bytes)

Having returned from Egypt and seized power as First Consul, Napoleon led the Army of the Reserve over the Alps against the Austrian Army besieging Genoa. After a period of skirmishing and manoeuvering, Melas, the Austrian commander, launched a surprise attack on the morning of 14 June, having deceived Napoleon as to his intentions through the use of a double agent. The attack initially drove the French back to Marengo village and, despite committing the Consular Guard, by 3pm the French were retreating. Believing he had won, the wounded Melas left the field to his Chief of Staff, Zach. The timely arrival of Desaix's Division led by Kellerman's cavalry and the 9e Légère threw the pursuing Austrians into confusion and turned the battle in Napoleon's favour, thus securing his position as First Consul. It could have been very different.

Corunna 1809 - Sir John Moore's Fighting Retreat by Philip Haythornthwaite

This book relates the story of the retreat to Corunna, one of the epic campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars. Late in 1808 Sir John Moore found himself virtually alone with his small British army deep inside Spain. The armies of his Spanish allies had been overwhelmed and he faced a victorious French force under the Emperor Napoleon. He had little option but to order a retreat to the port of Corunna. This became the most arduous of trials with armies traversing over appalling roads in the depths of winter. Somehow Moore held his outnumbered, exhausted men together as they struggled to reach safety. Finally at Corunna Moore's army turned to face its tormentor.

Jena 1806

osprey20.JPG (134323 bytes)

The 1806 Jena campaign ranks among Napoleon's greatest military achievements: in just 33 days, the Grande Armée won two decisive battles in a blitzkrieg style that demonstrates every aspect of the Napoleonic system of warfare. In this sequel to Austerlitz 1805, David Chandler describes and analyses the strategy of the campaign, the twin battles of Austerlitz and Jena and the remorseless pursuit of the Prussians that ensued, providing the most authoritative and incisive concise coverage of this military masterpiece yet published.

Austerlitz 1805, Battle of Three Emperors by David G Chandler

osprey2.jpg (297722 bytes)

Austerlitz was the battle that established Napoleon's reputation: a classic example of the general's masterly use of deception to lure his enemy into a carefully devised trap. Beginning with the bold and crushing advance of the French Army from the Rhine to the Danube, David Chandler describes the envelopment of Mack's army at Ulm, the manoeuvres to Austerlitz and the brilliant counter-attack that resulted in decisive defeat for the Austro-Russian Army.

Aspern & Wagram 1809, Mighty Clash of Empires by Ian Castle

osprey33.JPG (121539 bytes)

The 1809 campaign on the Danube was to break the spell of Napoleon's invincibility. Indeed, Wagram - the largest battle in history at the time - was Napoleon's revenge for his first personal defeat on the battlefield - at Aspern-Essling. Both these two-day battles are described by Ian Castle in this volume, with detailed maps and graphics that afford the reader the opportunity to follow the many changes of fortune during the epic battles, as each side captured, lost then recaptured key positions.

Eggmühl 1809, Storm Over Bavaria by Ian Castle

osprey56.jpg (242844 bytes)

This account focuses on the early part of the campaign between Austria and France, providing a companion narrative to Campaign 33, Aspern & Wagram 1809. The Author deals with the changes in the armies following Austria's defeat in 1805, and builds through the clashes at Teugn-Hausen, Abensburg, and Landshut to culminate in the Battle of Eggmühl. Neither Charles nor Napoleon were to achieve their objectives at Eggmühl - but the ground had been prepared for a bloody end to the 1809 campaign.

Salamanca 1812, Wellington Crushes Marmont by Ian Fletcher

osprey48.jpg (279834 bytes)

This was the most decisive battle of the entire Peninsula War. Wellington smashed Marmont's French Army and his pursuit of its shattered remnants led to the famous cavalry charge of the King's German Legion at Garcia Hernandez. There would be two more years of sieges and hard fighting before the Iron duke crossed the Pyrenees into France but from Salamanca the British and their Portuguese and Spanish Allies always had the upper hand.

Badajoz 1812, Wellington's Bloodiest Siege by Ian Fletcher

osprey65.jpg (290638 bytes)

The fortress towns of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz control the two main routes between Portugal and Spain: if Wellington were to consolidate his position in the Peninsula they had to be taken. Whilst Ciudad Rodrigo fell without much difficulty, the storming of Badajoz was an epic action involving Wellington's infantry in some of the most savage hand-to-hand fighting of the whole Peninsula War. In a nightmare assault on the night of 6 April 1812, Wellington's soldiers hacked their way through the huge medieval walls of the town, which were held by the resolute French and German garrison. Having stormed the town, the battle crazed army went berserk.

Vittoria 1813, Wellington Sweeps the French from Spain by Ian Fletcher

osprey59.jpg (263129 bytes)

The battle of Vittoria, on 21 June 1813, was the deciding battle of the Peninsula war. Joseph's army lost over 150 guns as well as the greatest treasure that had ever been taken on a battlefield. Following Wellington's victory there the French army was pushed back over the Pyrenees and into France. This ended Napoleon's ambitions in the Iberian peninsula once and for all and opened the doorway for an invasion of France itself.

Leipzig 1813, the Battle of the Nations by Peter Hofschroer

osprey25.jpg (284574 bytes)

Leipzig, the greatest clash of arms before the First World War, was the truly decisive engagement of the Napoleonic Wars. After the disastrous 1812 Russian campaign, half a million men in five armies settled the fate of Germany; the fate of Europe followed inexorably upon that. Including fully detailed lists of the opposing forces, Peter  Hofschroer describes the series of escalating battles - including Liebertwolkwitz, the greatest cavalry battle in history - by which the Emperor was at last brought to bay.

Austerlitz 1805, The Fate of Empires by Ian Castle

Austerlitz is undoubtedly one of the most famous battles of history.  Not only was it the first campaign Napoleon waged as Emperor of France, but also the first great test for his Grande Armee.  The Emperor himself regarded it as his greatest victory and it undoubtedly won him a mastery of Europe that would remain unbroken for almost a decade.  Most accounts of the campaign have until now been based almost exclusively on French sources, but following extensive research in the Austrian archives Ian Castle is now able to provide a far more balanced account of the Austerlitz campaign.  In this all new volume he chronicles the events that climaxed on the field of Austerlitz.

Vimeiro 1808, Wellesley's first victory in the Peninsular, by Rene Chartrand

On 2 August 1808 a British army of 14,000 men began landing north of Lisbon under the command of Sir Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington.  They were coming to assist the Portuguese, Britain's oldest ally, to liberate their country from its French occupiers.  Within a month Wellesley was to win two victories over the French at the battles of Rolica and Vimeiro.  General Andoche Junot, the French commander, was forced to surrender and evacuate Portugal.  Rene Chartrand examines the first of Wellesley's string of victories in the Peninsular War.

Bussaco 1810, Wellington Defeats Napoleon's Marshals by Rene Chartrand

By 1810, Napoleon reigned supreme over most of continental Europe, but the Iberian Peninsula remained unsubdued, particularly Portugal, which continued to resist.  Napoleon ordered Marshal Massena to crush this resistance with the Army of Portugal.  Greatly strengthened, Massena's army  would drive the Portuguese and British into the sea.  Facing the French were 60,000 British and Portuguese troops.  No-one knew how the Portuguese would perform in battle, but on 27 September 1810, they received their baptism of fire.  This title details the grueeling Bussaco campaign as French attempts to subdue Portugal reached their climax.

Fuentes de Onoro - Wellington's Liberation of Portugal by René Chartrand & Patrice Courcelle

In October 1810 the Allied position in Portugal appeared precarious. Despite defeating Marshal Massena's French army at Bussaco, Wellington had been forced to retreat to within a few miles of Lisbon. Here the French encountered a massive line of fortifications stretching from the River Tagus to the sea. Built amid great secrecy and on Wellington's specific orders, these Lines of Torres Vedras were the French high-water mark. In February with his army on the point of starvation, Massena was forced to retreat an the scene was set for the climactic action of Fuentes de Onoro.

Lutzen & Bautzen 1813, The Turning Point, by Peter Hofschroer

Following the disastrous Russian campaign of 1812, Napoleon found himself facing a new coalition of his old enemies.  With incredible speed he raised an army of 200,000 men and marched to join the remnants of the old Grand Armee in Germany.  However, he no longer faced the brittle enemies of 1805 and 1806 and at Lutzen on 2 May the inexperience of his new army began to show.  Faulty reconnaissance by raw cavalry allowed Ney's Corps to be surprised by Wittgenstein's Russians.  This book describes the last realistic chance Napoleon had to regain his empire by defeating the Allies in Germany before Austria stirred and the tide turned even more against him.
