A Concise History
of Warfare by Lord Montgomery.
Lord Montgomerys stimulating book must surely take
its place as a classic commentary on the history of warfare. It is
the fruit of a lifetime spent in the study and tactics of war and it bears
the authority of one who will without doubt be numbered among the great
commanders. Its greatest merit springs from the authors
understanding of the human factor in war. That it is permeated with
his particular and well remembered idiosyncrasies, the freshness and
vigour of his approach to any subject, will only enhance its undoubted
value as a deeply interesting, often inspiring and intensely instructive
book.
Illustrated paperback with 368 pages.
Book serial number W53. Price £7.99.

Rising Sun and Tumbling
Bear. Russias War with Japan by Richard Connaughton.
Manchuria, 1904 - 1905, and in their war with the
Japanese the Russians were wrong footed from the start, fighting at the
end of a 5000 mile single track railway against a brilliantly led and
fanatical Japanese army less than a week from their bases. The
Russian command structure was hopelessly confused, their generals old and
incompetent, the Tsar cautious and uncertain. The Russian naval
defeat at Tsushima was as farcical as it was complete. Seventeen
months of war left 3000,000 dead, a major European power defeated by the
Japanese and the beginnings of a new order in the Far East. The world was
changed - as the unsuspecting world would later discover.

The
Yom Kippur War 1973 (2), The Sinai by Simon Dunstan
Israel's victory in the 1967 'Six Day War' sowed the seeds of the
1973 Yom Kippur War. At 1400hrs on 6 October 1973, the Egyptian army
launched an assault crossing of the Suez Canal. The carefully co-ordinated
attack achieved complete tactical surprise. The sand embankments of
the Israeli Bar-Lev Line were breached and an Israeli counterattack thrown
back with heavy losses. In the second part of his two volume
analysis of the Yom Kippur War, Simon Dunstan details the fighting in the
Sinai , culminating in Operation Gazelle, the Israeli counterattack across
the Suez Canal. Although defeated miltarily, Egypt did ultimately
succeed in forcing the Israelis back to the negotiating table.

Peking 1900, The
Boxer Rebellion by Peter Harrington
In 1900 a violent rebellion swept northern China - the
Boxer Rebellion. The Boxers were a secret society who sought to rid
their country of the pernicious influence of the foreign powers who had
gradually acquired a stranglehold on China. With the connivance of
the Imperial Court they laid siege to the legation quarter of
Peking. Trapped inside were an assortment of diplomats, civilians
and a small number of troops. They were all Sir Claude Macdonald,
the British Minister in Peking, had to defend against thousands of hostile
Boxers and Imperial troops. It would now be a race against time.
Could the rag-tag defenders hold out long enough for the gathering relief
force to reach them? This book describes the desperate series of
events as the multinational force rushed to their rescue.
