The Battle of Britain
With the surrender of France on 22nd
June 1940, Britain and her Commonwealth stood alone against the might of
the German armed forces. In that dark summer of 1940, the threat of
invasion hung heavily over Britain and children were once more evacuated
to the countryside. The army was still recovering from its defeats
in France and could offer no real defence against invasion. Britain
had a strategy to meet the German threat, which was due to one man, Air
Chief Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding. Against enormous internal pressure,
Dowding had resisted committing the majority of his Spitfire and Hurricane
squadrons to the battle on the continent, knowing that the major battle
was yet to come - the Battle for Britain itself. Having preserved
his squadrons, Dowding could now concentrate on his four-point master plan
of defence: a fighter strike force of Spitfires and Hurricanes; a superbly
flexible radar fighter detection system; a defence shield of anti-aircraft
cover and a brilliantly simple defence strategy, disrupting the bomber
attacks before they could reach their targets but ensuring enough air
cover for the bases of the squadrons involved in the battle. This
documentary, using newly discovered footage, gives full justice to the
exceptional Commander Hugh Dowding, to Keith Park, his second-in-command
and to all the men and women who, during that dark summer of 1940,
inflicted the first defeat on German arms.

The History of the Luftwaffe, A Phoenix Rising.
From the ashes of the fires lit in the dog fights of the skies above
the carnage of World War One, a phoenix would rise - the Luftwaffe of the
Third Reich. No ordinary force, the Luftwaffe was to become the
handmaiden of Hitlers dream of conquest and a vital component of
Blitzkrieg or Lightning War. However the glories won in Poland,
Scandinavia, Holland, Belgium and finally France, as the Nazis marched,
victorious, through Europe, were to turn sour. The Fuhrers
continual demands upon his airforce, as he fanatically pursued his Grand
Design forced the Luftwaffe into the role of workhorse, though
incompetence, intrigue and greed amongst its commanders made the task near
impossible. Starved of new planes and pilots to fly them, stretched
across two fronts in Europe and playing a vital role in North Africa,
Goerings elite corps was fatally flawed. This tragic story
chronicles the initial brilliant success of the Luftwaffe in Europe, its
structure and tactics and the inherent weaknesses that were to drag the
phoenix once again to its inescapable consummation within the fires of
Berlin. The story is told using very rare footage only recently
obtained from the eastern block and not seen in the west since the war.

Bomber Command 1939-1945
A condensed yet comprehensive look at
the development and operations of RAF Bomber Command, from a fledgling
force at the outbreak of hostilities to one of the most potent forces in
the World on the final day. The DVD looks at the early years of 1939
- 1940 when the force suffered huge losses, through to 1941 when they
began to possess the means of victory. In 1942 they developed new
tactics and new aircraft and by 1943, with the use of the Pathfinder
Force, they were making 1,000 bomber raids on Germany and for the next two
years the Nazis reaped the Whirlwind that Bomber Harris had
promised them. By 1945 they had destroyed most of Germanys towns
and cities and broken the morale of the population.

Bombers the Story of Strategic Bombing
Strategic bombing was first used by the Germans in the 1940 Blitz and
became the keystone for Allied strategy in World War Two. As British
Lancasters hit at the heart of Germany by night, the US Eighth Air Force
Flying Fortresses bombed the industrial centres by day, resulting in a
round-the-clock bombardment that would not only tear the heart out of
Hitlers war effort but would reduce the German morale to rubble.
Rare archive material and dramatic film footage tells the story of a
controversial and costly strategy that was to be seen in operation in
later years during the war between the United States and Vietnam.

RAF Coastal Command - The Maritime Air
Battle of World War Two
RAF Coastal Command is perhaps the
lesser known of Britains wartime RAF Commands, with the Fighter and
Bomber Squadrons making most of the headlines. The tasks faced by
Coastal Command however were gigantic. These ranged from submarine
hunting to convoy protection, attacks on enemy shipping and U-boat pens to
reconnaissance, mine laying to air-sea rescue. The maritime air war
called for men of unusual skills and rare patience, often spending 20
hours or more on a mission. It has been said that without the
destructive power of the bombers and fighters, the Allies might not have
achieved victory. Without the patient, dogged devotion to duty of
the coastal crews, Britain would never have survived to achieve that
victory.

Daylight Bombing Raids Over Europe
Whilst the Royal Air Force concentrated on bombing Germany by night,
the United States Air Force carried out a dangerous strategic bombing
campaign against Nazi Germany during daylight hours. On every raid
some bombers suffered damage, exploding in mid-air, falling from the sky
in pieces or in tears of flames. Operating from airfields in rural
England, the Flying Fortresses and Liberator Bombers of the Eighth Air
Force and later the Ninth Air Force, escorted by the Thunderbolt and
Mustang fighters, learned a hard lesson in the skies over Europe.

Kamikaze - To Die for the Emperor.
Named after the Divine Wind which twice intervened to
prevent invasion by Kubla Khans armies in the 13th Century, the Kamikaze
pilots symbolised the lengths the Japanese Imperial Forces were prepared
to go to when faced with defeat. Opposed by the might of the American
Fleet rebuilt after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, the Imperial seal
of approval was given to suicide air attacks on the enemy stalking them in
the Pacific. Honoured for its purity, suicide was shrouded in
ceremony and mysticism, capturing the Samurai spirit. It took several
military forms when Japan withdrew from the League of Nations after
occupying Manchuria in 1931. Ramming techniques were refined alongside the
development of human bombs, bullets, torpedoes, flying bombs as the
suicide tactics struck terror into the hearts of men fighting to live
confronted by men determined to die. But it was the suicide pilots, dubbed
Black Edged Cherry Blossoms who were the central figures in this savage
saga. Rare archive action film captures the nightmare chaos of the
Pacific War as the air becomes thick with tracer bullets and belching
smoke as the sea foams with destruction. Defeat followed the gradual
depletion of men and machines, as the Banzai tactics led to mass suicide,
but not before the American Navy had been forced back by the Japanese
onslaught, and the world had caught a glimpse of the Samurai mentality as
a whole nation from the Emperor downwards were ready to die, and
frequently did.
