The Generalship of
Alexander the Great by J F C Fuller.
At the age of twenty, Alexander succeeded his father,
Philip of Macedon, and fulfilled his fathers plans for freeing the Greeks
of Asia Minor from Persian rule. He invaded the Persian Empire with
30,000 infantry and 5,000 cavalry and in a series of dazzling campaigns
which included the battles of Issus and Guagamela he defeated Darius and
was proclaimed King of Asia. His plans to conquer India were
resisted by his men, and death cut short the ambitions of one of the
greatest soldiers the world has ever known. He was the model for
successors as notable as Julius Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte, and his
campaigns are still studied in military academies throughout the
world. Major-General Fullers book is the first to be devoted to the
military achievements of the greatest of the world conquerors. In
general, books on Alexander the Great have been written by classical
scholars, and few classical scholars are students of war.

The
Thracians 700BC - AD46 by Christopher Webber.
Throughout the seven centuries
before Christ many hundreds of thousands of Thracians, in more than 40
tribes, occupied the area between northern Greece, southern Russia and
north west Turkey. Skilled horsemen, masters of light infantry
fighting in broken terrain, and renowned for their ferocity, the
Thracians were feared by even the greatest if their contemporaries, who
were eager to employ them as mercenaries. After surviving
invasions by the Persians, Greeks, Macedonians and Celts, the Thracians
were finally conquered by Rome in AD46. This concise but lavishly
illustrated study of their history and material culture includes the
results of the latest archaeological research, notably some remarkable
tomb paintings.

The Spartans by Nicholas V Sekunda and
Richard Hook

Book serial number Osprey BH2. Fully illustrated paperback with 64 pages. Price £8.99
The Spartans were the only full-time army in ancient Greece and were
thus a truly elite force. The entire machinery of the state and education
system was dedicated to creating superbly trained soldiers. Excelling in
war , restless in peace, this society's finest hour came as the Spartan
hoplites faced the might of the Persian Empire at the pass of Thermopylae,
in a battle that has become a byword for fortitude and bravery. Without
the indomitable courage and discipline of these warriors, the Persians
would surely have conquered Greece, and significantly altered the course
of history.

dynamic power of the Muslim Arabs. With a wide range of rarely seen
illustrations, plus superb full-colour maps and graphics, David Nicolle
sifts fact from legend to tell the story of one of history's truly

Adrianopole
AD 378 by Simon MacDowall
'Never, except in the battle of
Cannae, had there been so destructive a slaughter recorded in our
annals.' Thus the Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus recorded the
battle of Adrianopole, which spelled the beginning of the end of the Roman
Empire. Such a crushing Roman defeat by Gothic cavalry proved to the
Empire, as well as to the Goths themselves, that the migratory barbarians
were a force to be reckoned with. This book tells the story of the
misguided Roman plans and the surprise attack of the Gothic cavalry, and
puts forward the most recent theories as to the true location of the
battlefield.

Marathon 490 BC
The story of the Marathon
campaign is an epic of the Ancient World. When the Ionian Greeks
revolted against their Persian overlords in 499BC, the cities of Athens
and Eritria came to their aid. The Persian King Darius swore
vengeance and in 490 BC a fleet of 600 ships packed with troops was sent
to take revenge on the Athenians. This book details how the Greeks
met the Persians in battle at Marathon and drove them in rout back to
their ships. The moral effect of this victory was enormous - for the
first time a Greek army had defeated the Persians and demonstrated the
superiority of hoplite tactics.

Pictish Warrior AD
297 - 841 by Paul Wagner
First mentioned by name in AD 297, the Picts inhabited
Northern Britain from the end of the 3rd century AD to the 9th. They
rose to power in the devastation following Emperor Septimus Severus's
repression of the Caledonians in AD 208, and dominated Northern Britain
for over 500 years, before vanishing mysteriously. The Picts
represent a high point of Celtic civilisation, remaining free and
unconquered beyond the borders of the Roman world, and rising to become
the first barbarians to form a recognisable nation. This title takes
a detailed look at their origins, and examines Pictish heroic and warrior
society, covering education and training, appearance and equipment, the
status of women, and the experience of battle.
